đź”· Community Development

The Chakma community of Mizoram is one of the most underdeveloped tribal groups in the state, facing persistent social, economic, and developmental challenges despite constitutional recognition and its own autonomous council. Their villages often lie in remote hilly regions with limited infrastructure and basic services, which has contributed to gaps in education, health, and livelihood opportunities compared to other communities in Mizoram and the broader Northeast.

Key Challenges Facing the Chakma Community

1. Educational Disadvantage
Chakma areas have some of the lowest literacy and school retention levels in Mizoram. Limited quality schools, shortages of trained teachers, and lack of educational resources mean many children drop out early or never complete their education. Without proper schooling, opportunities for higher education and skilled employment remain out of reach for too many families.

2. Economic and Livelihood Struggles
Traditionally reliant on subsistence agriculture such as shifting cultivation (jhum), many Chakma households struggle with low and unstable incomes. Poor access to irrigation, modern farming techniques, and market infrastructure constrains economic development and keeps poverty entrenched.

3. Healthcare Access
Remote geography and under‑resourced health facilities mean basic healthcare services are difficult to access, especially for maternal and child health. Long distances, lack of transportation, and limited emergency care make illness and preventable conditions serious, ongoing community concerns.

4. Governance and Representation
Although the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) was established under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to empower local self‑governance, political instability, factionalism, and administrative challenges have slowed development progress. Frequent leadership changes and governance gaps have frustrated community efforts to improve infrastructure and public services.

5. Cultural Identity & Social Inclusion
As a minority ethnic group with a distinct language, religion, and cultural heritage, the Chakma people also face pressures related to social inclusion. Preserving cultural identity and uplifting community well‑being in the face of broader socio‑political dynamics remains a priority for many families.
